Yangtze River Cruise Lines: Who Runs the Ships

On the Rhine or the Danube, the company on the brochure usually owns and crews the ship. On the Yangtze, that is rarely true. The ships are operated by China-based fleets, and many Western tour companies place their guests aboard them. Knowing which Yangtze river cruise line operates your ship tells you more about the onboard experience than the name on the brochure.

The Two Fleets Most Requested by North Americans

Century Cruises

Six Yangtze ships, the newest named Century Vision. Sails the 3- and 4-night gorge routes, the 10- and 11-night Shanghai routes, and sells its own land-and-river China tours. The brand also operates ships on the Danube, the Rhine and the Nile.

Victoria Cruises

Five ships listed on its own site: Victoria Anna, Isabella, Jenna, Katarina and Sabrina. Sails Chongqing to Yichang (3 nights) and Yichang to Chongqing (4 nights), plus a 7-night round trip from Chongqing. Calls itself the only American-managed line on the river.

Both run on the same stretch of river and stop at many of the same sights, so the difference is in the ships themselves, the service style and the extras each line includes.

How to Compare Yangtze River Cruise Lines

  • Ship age: ask for the build or refit year of the exact ship on your date.
  • Language: confirm an English-speaking cruise director and shore guides.
  • Excursions: ask which shore visits are included and which are optional extras.
  • Dining: check whether Western dishes are offered alongside Chinese menus.
  • Route: check whether the line sails only the gorges or the full river.
  • Transfers: ask whether airport and station transfers are part of the fare.

Where Tour Companies Fit In

Many travelers book the Yangtze inside a China tour sold by a tour company rather than directly with a line. That can be the easiest way to go, because flights inside China, hotels and guides are handled together. The trade-off is less choice of ship. If you have a ship in mind, our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise can look for a package that uses it, or build the trip around the cruise instead. See China tour packages with a Yangtze cruise.

Questions About the Lines

Which Yangtze river cruise line is best for English speakers?

Look for a line that puts an English-speaking cruise director and guides on every sailing. Victoria Cruises says it does; on other fleets it can depend on the departure, so ask for the specific date.

Why does the same ship appear in different tour companies’ brochures?

Because tour companies buy cabins on the same Chinese-operated ships. Two packages can use one ship and still differ in hotels, flights, group size and guides on land.

Do the lines sail all year?

Victoria says its departures run year-round, and Century lists sailings across the year. Schedules thin out in the coldest months, so check your dates.
